Take two and call me in the morning

My brother, Philip, has known since high school what he wanted to do with his life.

Maybe even longer than that.

For as long as I can remember, he has be focused on his goal of becoming a doctor.

Now, after countless years of studying and hard work, my little bro can officially add the letters MD to the end of his signature!

Look at that face! Wouldn't you trust him with your health and well being?

He graduated from medical school on May 17th and will begin his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham this summer.

We are so proud of you!

(Um, so can you write me a few prescriptions or what?)

Weight Watchers, Recently Postpartum, and You Mean That Wasn't a Dream?

It's been a while since I have participated in Writer's Workshop. Well, actually, since I have really blogged at all! But I did just have a baby so give me a break!

But I realize that the baby excuse is not going to hold forever, so this week I am jumping back in with both feet!

And the prompts are:

(I am skipping 1 & 2)

3.) How much does focusing on weight affect your daily life?(inspired by Musings Of A Blond Mom)

Oh my weight! I wish I didn't spend so much time focusing on it. I wish I could say that I am one of those people that never steps on a scale but that would be a lie. I weigh myself every morning. I have spent almost 3 of the last five years being pregnant and the in between time trying to reclaim my pre-pregnant body! It has been quite a roller coaster: up 60 lbs, down 65, up 45lbs, down 45, up 50 lbs, down 20 so far. Twice I have managed to lose all of my pregnancy weight gain (which is considerable each time!) And twice I have immediately gotten pregnant again without even getting to enjoy my skinny-ness. (Darn my hubby for being so hot!) I have to keep telling myself that it has only been a few weeks and that last time it took over a year and consistently going to Weight Watchers to do it. I love Weight Watchers! I just wish I didn't need it!

(Skipping #4 too)

5.) List ten things that make you HAPPY.(inspired by our irritation at our own complaining from last weeks "Sick Of" posts.)

I love top 10 lists! Here are the top 10 things that make me happy about not being pregnant anymore:

  1. This little guy:

  2. Pants that zip!

  3. Sleeping on my stomach!

  4. Shaving my legs all the way down to the ankle!

  5. Seeing my feet when I look down!

  6. Holding my other two children on my lap again!

  7. Opening the car door without hitting my belly!

  8. WINE!!

  9. Having my body to myself again!

  10. Oh and did I mention this little guy:

Because he makes me the happiest!

6.) Ok I was going to end it with five, but Laina just got out of bed as I was finishing this post and I SWEAR she is sleep walking. It's creepy. I keep asking her what she is doing and she's staring at me...but not directly at me...kind of just a centimeter to the left of my head. I KNEW she was a sleep walker. I just knew it. SO! Share a sleep walking story of your own!!(inspired by my scary four year old)

My alleged sleepwalking experience takes me back to a high school sleepover with three of my girlfriends. We had been to a party that night and then came back over to my friend Joni's house and camped out on her living room floor. The next morning when we woke up, I was greeted with "what the hell were you doing outside last night?" According to my friends, in the middle of the night I got up, unlocked the front door, went outside into the yard (it's December, by the way) and just stood there. Joni had to go out and get me and lead me back inside. Of course, being asleep, I don't actually remember doing this so I am not entirely sure that they weren't yanking my chain. I'm pretty gullible. All I know is that during the years of our friendship, in my waking hours, I never once was able to unlock the front door of Joni's house unassisted. It was a weird lock and I never could figure it out. Other than that unreliable story, I am not usually a sleepwalker.

So there you have it! Are you a weight obsessed, top ten list loving sleepwalker? If so head on over to Mama's Losin It and join the workshop fun! If not, head over there anyways and have a laugh at the rest of the crazies!

Schoool's...Out. For. Sum-mer!

I have been singing that one line over and over to myself all day.

Today was Libby's last day of preschool.
Here she is on the first day back in September:

She has changed so much since then. She has gotten taller and her face has lost it's last traces of baby fat. She doesn't look like my baby anymore. She is definitely a "big girl" now! She has become more confident and less anxious in unfamiliar situations. She has learned to write her name. She learned who Batman is from Jeremy and she learned the phrase "no fair!" (God bless the child who taught her that one!) She has had such a wonderful year filled with new experiences, new friends and a fabulous teacher! I wish Mrs Johnston was going to pre-kindergarten with her!

I don't actually have any pictures of the last day of school since my camera is still MIA. This picture was taken last week. Libby is playing dress up in "the Loft" with her friend Jiya.

She is growing up way too fast!

Road trip

Well we survived our first road trip with three children!

My brother graduated from medical school this past Sunday and I had promised him months ago that so long as I had a two week old baby, I would be there. Since John was born in plenty of time to make the two week old cutoff, we loaded up the car and drove the 10+ hours to Brimingham, AL to celebrate with my family.

John is a super traveler! The other two children...not so much! We had been in the car for less than 20 minutes when Libby started asking "Are we there yet?" "How much longer until we get there?" "Why is it so far to Granna's house?" and so on and so on! When we finally arrived, Libby told my sister that it had taken us a few days to get there!

We had a great time visiting with family and I took lots of pictures, but of course I forgot my camera in Birmingham. So I am going to wait until I get it back to tell you all about the graduation. (It blows my mind that my baby brother is a doctor! But more about that later!)

Moving across the hall

JT earned himself a one way ticket out of Mommy's room the other night. I would really like for him to keep sleeping by my bed because it is just easier for me but after he kept me awake between feedings Monday night with all of the grunting, snorting and snarfling in his sleep (i swear I have the noisiest kids!), I decided the time has come for him to go! Mommy's sanity depends on it!
Even though co-sleeping is the most convenient option (for me) during those early weeks when babies eat so much at night, each of my children has gotten less time sleeping with me than the one before. Libby got a full six weeks in my room. She was my first baby and I was nervous about her being on the other side of the house from me. She was also the noisiest of my children and because of that Brad and I actually slept in the living room on the pull out couch for one of those weeks while she stayed in our room so that I wouldn't be too far from her! Brad finally put his foot down and demanded that he be allowed back in his own bed! (I had PPD after Libby and was slightly off my rocker at the time!) Emma Jane got two weeks before her nighttime symphony got her booted from my bed. JT only made it ten days! I thought he was going to be the quiet one. I was wrong!
Here he is sleeping in his crib for the first time! I actually put him down awake and he put himself to sleep! Yea, JT!

The purple shoes

Have I ever shared with you my love affair with cute shoes? I love shoes! I personally think that what you wear around your neck and on your feet can make or break your outfit.

I especially love my shoes these days because really, accessories are all I've got right now! I am still wearing maternity clothes most days and I can't even bring myself to look in my closet! Who knows if all of those clothes will ever fit again?

Since shopping right now would be a really bad idea...right up there with cutting your hair too soon after giving birth, my sweet friend Emily went shopping for me! My cute new shoes came in the mail just the other day!

This weekend is my brother's med school graduation. I might be wearing a tent to the ceremony, but at least my feet will look good!

Overwhelmed

I am totally overwhelmed right now!

But not because of the new baby...he is actually a piece of cake!

And I am not even overwhelmed by the mountains of laundry and dishes that pile up everyday...hubby has been such a huge help and I have fabulous friends bringing us meals so it is not like I have to cook!
And even though I am exhausted, the sleepless nights aren't really overwhelming me either.

It's my computer. Everytime I walk past it, it is just a reminder that I have been neglecting you! And not because I don't have anything to say...I have a running list of blog topics that just keeps getting longer and longer. It's just that by the end of the day when I have a few minutes to myself, I am so tired I can hardly spell blog much less type a whole post.

So here is a bullet-point list of a few of the highlights from our week:

  • On Thursday, Libby's class hosted a Mother's Day party! This was seriously the most fun party I have been to in a while! When all of the mommies arrived we were escorted into the classroom by our children. They had decorated their table with a tablecloth and place settings for each mommy including a flower pot, handpainted by each child! There was also a gift for each of the mommies wrapped in handpainted paper. After opening our gifts, the children served us strawberries, cookies and cheese and crackers. While we ate Libby's teacher read to us some interviews she had done with the kids about their moms. It was pretty funny! Libby said that my name was Mrs. Lauren. (Apparently she and I have a very formal relationship!) She also said that I am 40 years old and that my favorite thing to do is wash clothes!

  • While running errands the other day, all three of my children had a meltdown in the car! Libby, my delicate southern belle, piped up from the backseat and said, "Mommy, we are just wilting like little flowers!" Should I change her name to Scarlett or what?

  • Emma Jane has become a toy hoarder. She will take the pieces to all of her favorite games and toys, put them all in one basket and then refuse to let Libby play with any of it! She also has thrown a few more of her raging tantrums, mostly about bedtime. Apparently she thinks she no longer needs sleep!
  • John Thomas had his first bath at home. It really ticked him off! Although the washing didn't make him nearly as mad as the rub down with baby lotion did afterwards! I guess it was a little cold! Doesn't he look cute in his blue towel? (I am totally loving all of the little boy stuff!)

  • My little man also slept for five hours in a row last night!! Woohoo!! Of course he made up for that by nursing nonstop between 3 and 6 am!

Here's one more picture of my cute baby!

Happy Mother's Day!

Just an update

Life in our house has been all about baby. He is only five days old but it seems like he has always been a part of our family! The girls have taken to him (especially Emma Jane) much more easily than I expected. There hasn't been any jealousy or resentment...so far!

JT is such a good baby! He has been eating really well (and enthusiastically!) I can't wait to see what he weighs when we go to the pediatrician tomorrow! Thankfully he is a good sleeper too! He has set a three hour schedule for himself at night which is really nice for me! He is a little less consistent during the day. He has peed on me a few more times, but this morning he also peed on himself which really ticked him off! (ha, ha, haha, ha!)

Last night we had a little birthday/welcome to the family party for JT complete with cake and ice cream!

Emma Jane and Libby sang "Happy Birthday" to him and then dug in to the cake!
JT had fun at the party too!

That is all from us right now! JT says "See ya!"

Baby Love

Libby and Emma Jane were so excited to meet their new little brother!

Emma Jane is already taking to her new role as a big sister. Look at what a good helper she is!

She loved holding him, although I think she thought he was a baby doll at first. When I ask her to give him back to mommy she said, "No, I ohn't want to!"
Libby is definitely the experienced big sister! She held JT like a pro right from the start!
She also enjoyed introducing JT to Bakissa. Our family sure has a lot of new babies!

But nobody is more in love with John Thomas than his daddy! Brad is so excited to have a "man child!" Men are so funny like that!

Who couldn't love that sweet little face!

A river runs through it

I got peed on today! I was warned by many that this would happen...probably before I left the hospital. I really tried to be careful but he got me anyways! As soon as I took off his diaper I quickly put a wipe over his penis and then cleaned off his bottom. Then put a fresh diaper under him. And as soon as I uncovered him to finish putting on the diaper he let loose!! It missed my face but got me right in the chest! I shrieked and in the absence of another wipe, towel or anything I put my hand over him to block the stream. So he peed (a LOT) right in my hand, but at least it kept most of it contained in the fresh diaper underneath him. Boys are so different! Neither of my girls ever peed on me! On themselves, yes! On me, no!

So, those of you with boys...What other fun things do I have in store for me?
